Welcome to Red Star Simulations

About Us

Our Goal

Red Star Simulations was created by two pilots looking to bring the most realistic flight experience possible to the DCS World; Completely pilot-oriented modules, with the primary focus on accurate flight dynamics.

Our Team

The team currently has members from all sides of the globe; North America, South America, Europe, South Asia, and North Africa.

The developers, modelers and textures are working closely with the pilots, to ensure that the each aspect of the plane is correct. To ensure accuracy, engineering CAD programs are used in some cases for modeling parts of the airplane, weapons, pods, pylons and fuel tanks.

Focus

Red Star Simulations will be focused on 1st thru 3rd Generation fighter and attack planes.

About the Pilots

Pilots have over 25 years of flying experience each; this includes flying civilian planes (including airlines), paramilitary prop planes, and military fighter/attack jets.

Current Project: MiG-17F "Fresco"

  • MiG-17 is a 1st generation jet fighter that was designed to replace the MiG-15 and fix its stability and high speed issues. Although it was intended to be an interceptor (of Western bombers), its small size, stability and maneuverability made it a formidable plane in close combat dogfights against newer and faster adversaries. It's a legendary plane that has been involved in conflicts around the world for over two decades, including Straits of Taiwan war, Vietnam war, Six-Day war, War of Attrition, and Yom Kipur.

  • MiG-17 had many versions and was built in several countries under license. Many countries who flew it also custom upgraded their MiG-17s to fit their military needs of the day. For this reason, it can be hard to find two same exact MiG-17s today.

  • We are currently developing the MiG-17F (Lim-5) version. It is a day-fighter version that includes a gun radar with an ASP-4N gunsight, 23 and 37 mm cannons, and wing mounted bombs. We are also adding an Egyptian weapons upgrade that includes the Sakr rockets and belly mounted bombs, same as the Lim-5s that were upgraded and used in the Middle East and North African conflicts during the 1960's and 70's.

  • MiG-17F is a smooth-flying 1st generation maneuverable jet fighter. It's a stable and fun plane to fly throughout most of its flight envelope, but flying it at the edges does require experience and good "stick n' rudder" skills. The early jet engine makes it a fun but unforgiving plane.

  • The MiG-17F module should be a jewel for anyone who is a true fan of the golden age of jet pilots and their legendary planes.

    Status

    • SFM model for AI is complete. Flight dynamics are relatively accurate even with limited SFM programing. AI performs as expected, same as a trained MiG-17F pilot would. It will give you a good fight so don't take it lightly.

    • The EFM flight dynamics is +97% complete, with only the following items left to finish:

                 - Flap dynamics and compression when reaching Mach 0.5+ speeds

                 - Stall behavior update

                 - Spins

Flight dynamics is in keeping with our original promise to make the flight model REALISTIC!

The MiG-17F flies like the real thing, so be ready!!!

    • New MiG-17F 3d model is complete; currently going thru optimization then texturing. Weapons are complete (optimized and textured).

    • The 3d cockpit model is complete; currently it is going thru optimization and texturing.

    • The 3D pilot model is complete (optimized and textured); the pilot is based on a 1950's-1960's era pilot for historical accuracy.

    • Systems development is under way, with a few systems already developed and modeled into DCS.

All upcoming ETA dates are estimates and are subject to change.

    FAQ

Will the module be available to the public?

    • The MiG-17F Lim5 went thru the rigorous Eagle Dynamics approval process and will be an official DCS module.

Are there actual MiG-17 pilots helping with the project?

    • We have 3 current United States MiG-17F airshow pilots helping as SME's on the MiG-17F module, including the great Will Ward.
    • We also have several retired MiG-17 military pilots, retired pilots who flew against the MiG-17, and mechanics who know the plane from their military careers helping with the project.
    • All MiG-17 personnel who have helped with the project will be thanked officially for their help when the module is released, this is ONLY if they wish us to do so publicly. For the rest who choose to remain anonymous, we at Red Star Simulations will forever be grateful to them for their help.

Are there plans for a MiG-17AS version?

    • Due to lack of data on the AS version, there will be no MiG-17AS version.

Can I sign up for Alpha or Beta testing?

    • Big part of Alpha testing is focused on flight dynamics, so being an actual pilot is a requirement. Alpha testers are already a part of the testing team.

    • Beta testing will be broader, but it will be made up of experienced DCS pilots. These DCS pilots will be people who have tested before and know how to test. They have to follow instructions when needed, be detail oriented and meticulous in their reporting of issues. There will be an announcement with a request for Beta testers. (Do not submit request yet)

What is the next plane Red Star Simulations is looking into making?

    • At this time, our full focus is on getting the MiG-17F out and have not decided on the next module.
    • However, we are keeping our ears open as to what DCS pilots are requesting, and at the same time testing the waters when it comes to data and information gathering. We will only make a plane if we can get the full data and information on it to make a realistic module.
